From the human genome to the analysis of protein structures

Attention surrounds emitted light as a breakthrough technique in the analysis of matter and reactions. SPring-8, constructed in the Harima Science Garden City in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, is the world’s highest performance large-scale fundamental research facility for emitted light, and is administered by the Japanese Science and Technology Agency, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and RIKEN. IDX technology supports numerous accelerators and electromagnets for altering the trajectory of high-energy electrons in this facility. It is expected that the high intensity, high energy light emitted from SPring-8 can be used in research fields where traditional light sources could not easily be used, bringing the ultramicro-world into sharp focus, and raising the prospect of uses in a wide range of research fields such as materials, earth sciences, life sciences and medicine.
Also, at the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute of the JAEA, our cutting-edge technology is involved in R&D for bio- and space semiconductors using heavy ion beam, and in low energy ion beam irradiation equipment used in new material synthesis from new raw materials at the National Institute for Material Science (NIMS).
